A CAIRNS man desperate to live closer to his daughter in Brisbane has been left thousands of dollars out of pocket and “homeless” for a short period after the Department of Housing and Public Works failed to provide him with a wheelchair accessible unit.
Mathew Wright, 46, has been restricted to his wheelchair since 2003, after he was hit by a taxi on the Captain Cook Highway near Holloways Beach.
He said he was living in a wheelchair accessible public housing unit at Smithfield when he requested to move to Brisbane so he could be closer to his daughter, as well as try to find employment and be closer to see his school and army friends.
After being told there was a unit available, he said he “got excited” and booked removalists, flights and accommodation.
“We went and got the key to the new place, went round, went to go through the front door and this wheelchair would not fit through the front door,” Mr Wright said.
