Tenants living in Wellington social housing are “devastated” a community development initiative is being dissolved and are concerned about the well-being of residents.
Their plea to save the award-winning Community Action Programme (Cap) comes after a damning review of social housing criticised the service and Wellington City Council decided to fold it into existing tenant advisors’ roles.
A social staffer, close to the service, believes the review was “flawed” and had a predetermined outcome, so its funds could be reallocated.
But the council said the report was accurate, and with the end of Cap the council would free up staff to work more with the community.
A group of tenants, some of whom did not want to be named for fear of repercussion, said they wanted to speak up for Cap, because it was their voice for so many years.
