Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore has asked property group Lendlease to buy the iconic Sirius building in a bid to save the brutalist block from the wrecking ball.
With the property group required to build 65 affordable homes within five kilometers of Barangaroo South as part of its deal to develop the precinct, Ms Moore says Sirius would be the perfect “win-win”.
“Lendlease can fulfill their commitment to provide affordable housing for low-income workers in the immediate vicinity of Barangaroo while protecting an iconic piece of Sydney architecture,” Ms Moore told AAP on Tuesday.
“It is critical that Sirius is retained for affordable and social housing and I strongly urge Lendlease to seriously consider this proposal.”
The brutalist building next to the Harbour Bridge – which has been used for social housing for more than 30 years – is on the market.
It’s expected developers will replace it with hundreds of private apartments, despite fierce opposition from community groups.
