A PROPOSED community housing development in Alawa has divided opinion among nearby residents.
The Territory Government is planning to demolish a row of four vacant houses in Young Cres and replace them with up to 10 new units, but not everyone in the street is happy about the plan.
Larry Costello, whose property borders one end of the row, said while he wasn’t opposed to community housing in principle, the 10-unit proposal was inappropriate for the area.
The resident of two decades said the consensus among his neighbours was the properties would be put to better use by renovating the existing houses to preserve the amenity of the street.
“On the list of the housing commission there’s lots and lots of families that are desperate to get into houses,” he said.
