THE Sirius apartment block at The Rocks is officially for sale to developers, the State Government confirmed this morning.
Social Housing Minsiter Pru Goward made the announcement at a press conference in the foyer of the 37-year-old building in Cumberland St that was once home to 250 public housing tenants.
It is understood the Government wants at least $100 million for the property next to the Harbour Bridge.
Critics of the sale, who failed earlier this year in an attempt to have it heritage-listed, predict it will end up being luxury apartments or a boutique hotel.
Community group Save Our Sirius (SOS) said the building should be kept to help reduce the shortage of social housing in the inner city.
Sirius was built by the NSW Housing Commission said
But Ms Goward, who was with Finance Minister Victor Dominello and Planning Minister Anthony Roberts for the announcement, argues the sale of Sirius, containing 79 apartments, will fund the completion of more affordable housing across the state.
