Cultural Diversity Week shines light on housing struggle

Studies from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has shown over the last decade, the number of older Australians aged between 55 and 74 years old experiencing homelessness has increased by 49 percent.

Specialising in the housing needs of older people, Housing for the Aged Action Group (HAAG) reports many older migrants, especially Chinese and Indian migrants, often arrive in Australia later in life and haven’t been able to purchase a house.

These older people are at a higher risk of becoming homeless due to language barriers, a lack of knowledge in navigating Australian systems and poorer overall socioeconomic status.
