Government addressing compliance concerns around short-stay rentals

Steps to ensure the checks and balances are in place when it comes to short stay accommodation

The Hodgman Liberal Government is contributing to the Legislative Council inquiry into short-stay rentals in Tasmania.

We strongly support the short stay accommodation sector as we recognise the significant economic contribution it has made to our State.

The Government has taken a balanced approach to regulation however it is clear that there are issues around compliance, which we are committed to addressing.

A communications campaign is currently running to make sure people who own short stay rentals clearly understand what the rules are and their obligations.

The Government will also introduce legislation later this year to enforce compliance with current regulations. The legislation will also enable us to gather more meaningful data to paint a clear picture of home sharing across Tasmania.

The legislation is currently being drafted and will be made available for public consultation.
