When a stroke left Bruce Stubbs unable to work, he and his wife found themselves in need of more affordable accommodation.
The couple were eventually linked with an over-55s community of subsidised housing in
“We were a bit wary when we heard Mount Druitt,” Mr Stubbs said.
“When we lived in Sydney, Mount Druitt didn’t have a good name. We didn’t know what to expect.
“But it’s a very safe community, we’ve had no trouble living here. We enjoy the closeness of the community. It’s a very quiet area, believe it or not.”
The small community, like the suburb it occupies, defies stereotypical images of social housing.
Residents regularly go on outings, including a Sydney Harbour cruise and a trip to the south coast.
