Experts are blaming high rent costs and low wage growth for a large spike in homelessness in Western Sydney. Between 2011 and 2016 homelessness in Western Sydney jumped 67 per cent, while the CBD saw 51 per cent growth over the same period. Wesley Mission’s Graeme Cole says the organisation’s research indicates west and south-west Sydney are the financial stress capitals of Australia, and is calling for more social housing in the areas.
