Homeless youth charity prepares for serious talks with government

A MEETING has been scheduled between the State Government and Cairns charity Street Level Youth Care following the Cairns Post’s revelations this week of widespread inhalant abuse in the city.

Youth worker Roy Edwards said a government spokesman had been in touch, at first asking him to fly to Brisbane to touch base, but finally settling on an easier option.

“Someone from the (Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services) is coming up in six to eight weeks to talk,” he said.

Mr Edwards has plenty he wants to discuss, from spiralling youth suicide rates to homelessness and aerosol inhalant abuse on the streets of Cairns.

The organisation has specific needs — reliable sources of food and container donations, new marquees and funds to put newer food vans on the road — but Mr Edwards also wants to talk about youth problems in a more general sense.
