Mara House: Building Community Connections

In Tasmania 25% of people who experience homelessness are youth, but there is more to supporting young people experiencing homelessness than providing a roof over their head.

Colony 47’s Mara House Program is a vital service providing supported accommodation for young women, aged 13-18, who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

With a focus on linking them to community, Mara creates opportunities for the young women to explore and work on solutions to the barriers they have faced in their lives.

The young women at Mara recently took part in the MAKE YOUR MARK exhibition, an AccessArt initiative of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, delivered in partnership with local government.

This year’s theme was HOME and the girls at Mara House were involved in creating an art project with Tasmanian artist, Cynthia Finlay, that explored the concept of home.
