Melbourne Lord Mayor to Speak at Homelessness Conference

The new Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Sally Capp, will speak at the National Homelessness Conference 2018 in the plenary session, ‘Beyond the criminalisation of inner-city homelessness’.

Homelessness has already been a key focus of the Lord Mayor’s term. In June she voted with her fellow Melbourne City Councillors to continue with the homelessness operating protocol, which has been successfully running since September 2017.

The Lord Mayor also participated in StreetCount 2018, the first joint count undertaken of rough sleepers across the Cities of Melbourne, Stonnington, Port Phillip, Yarra and Maribyrnong over one night. The same week, the Lord Mayor took part in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout and gained just a small insight into what it’s like to sleep rough in the middle of winter.

The Lord Mayor has held senior roles at both KPMG and ANZ and most recently was Victorian Executive Director of the Property Council of Australia.

The plenary session will be one of the first opportunities the homelessness sector has had to hear from the Lord Mayor in her new role.
