Metronet: Around 1400 affordable homes to be built near stations

ALMOST 1400 “affordable homes”, including 320 for social housing, will be built within walking distance of train stations across Perth under a new Metronet plan — but not in the affluent western suburbs.

A tender document calling for submissions for affordable housing projects within 1km of Metronet stations highlights neighbourhoods on every Perth train line except the Fremantle route.

South of the river, Murdoch, Cockburn Central, Aubin Grove, Mandurah, Victoria Park, Carlisle and Oats Street are listed.

To the north, the tender identifies Leederville, Stirling, Greenwood, Whitfords, Edgewater and Joondalup.

On the eastern Midland line, Maylands, Bayswater, Ashfield, Bassendean and Success Hill are highlighted.

“These guidelines place a strong emphasis on expanding the volume and diversity of affordable housing — including smaller dwellings to meet the needs of one or two-person households, well-located sites in terms of general amenity and proximity to major activity centres (e.g. public transport, employment and services) and maximising the return on the State Government’s investment in housing,” the tender document reads.
