No new public housing for Canberra’s urban renewal precinct, small proportion for new suburbs

The Barr government will not release any land for new public, community or affordable housing in the urban renewal precinct along the stage one light rail route in 2017-18.

The government’s long-awaited housing affordability targets also shows no new public or community housing sites will be released this year for public or community housing in six new suburbs under development.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr, housing minister Yvette Berry and planning minister Mick Gentleman signed off on the targets for the City Renewal Authority and Suburban Land Agency this month, more than six months after the two agencies were created.

While Ms Berry in 2014 had spoken out against the government’s public housing renewal program, fearing it would push tenants “out of the city”, it seems since gaining the housing portfolio, Ms Berry no longer holds her earlier concerns.
