Northcote by-election: Darebin Council lobbies for sky rail, public housing

PUBLIC housing, sky rail and pokies reform are among a list of priorities presented to Northcote by-election candidates by Darebin Council.

The council hopes to use the November 18 poll to lobby candidates and MPs for action.

The Bell St level crossing removal would be expanded to include three additional level crossings under a $247 million sky rail proposal by the council.

Darebin Mayor Kim Le Cerf said Northcote had historically been a safe seat and many important projects had been overlooked by successive Victorian governments.

“That has changed and we now have a really good opportunity in the lead up to the by-election to meet with candidates and MPs to secure funding for projects that deliver important social, economic and environmental benefits,” she said.

Other items on the council’s wish list include $25 million for a new sports stadium in Thornbury that would provide facilities for 5000 women and girls and gambling reforms to tackle Darebin’s $84 million habit.
