Northern Territory set to hand back indigenous housing leases in remote communities

The Northern Territory will today tell Canberra it intends to hand back all indigenous housing leases in 44 remote communities, forcing the federal government to scramble amid an election campaign to find alternatives to deliver construction, maintenance and tenancy management services.

The dramatic move leaves uncertain the future of programs meant to combat overcrowding and low living standards in more than half the Territory’s 73 main impoverished settlements.

It follows a bitter, public battle between Indigenous Affairs Minister Nigel Scullion and NT Chief Minister Michael Gunner over funding for the next round of their governments’ joint, billion-dollar housing program.
