Open your eyes to homelessness on Melbourne streets

I was having a bad day.

Nothing went right at work, then when I was driving home a truck thinking it was a convertible got stuck under a bridge closing down a main road right near my home. When I had finally navigated the 30 minute diversion in gridlock, the roller door at my apartment wouldn’t work. Perfect.

I got out of the car fuming figuring the harder I pressed the garage buzzer the more likely it was to spring to life, when I noticed an elderly woman going through the bins outside. It was bin day for lots of apartments so there were about ten all lined up.

I am nosey (journalists generally are) so I went over to see what she was doing.

“Hello have you lost something?”

She was defensive at first so I quickly assured her there was no problem I was just seeing if I could help.
