Pressure builds on shelters

Kalgoorlie-Boulder agencies supporting the homeless face pressure in the build-up to Christmas.

Goldfields Women’s Refuge has just five bedrooms and manager Jacqui Smith said the festive season was always a difficult time.

“Homelessness is a particular problem in Kalgoorlie-Boulder about now because people come in from the Lands and get stuck here,” she said.

“There are times in the past when we’ve had three generations of the same family in our building. We have to break that mindset — that belief that it is normal to just keep doing what those have done before. Some people find themselves in difficulty because of circumstances beyond their control and others because of the bad choices they’ve made.”
