There is a critical shortage of public housing right across New Zealand, not just in Auckland, Housing Minister Phil Twyford says.
His comment came as more than 1600 applicants were placed into public housing in the three months to December 31.
However, this still left thousands more Kiwis on the national waiting list.
“We want the public to understand the extent of these issues,” Mr Twyford said on Tuesday as his government released fact sheets on social housing in 11 regions.
“Everyone – no matter where they live – should have a warm, dry, safe home. Solving the national housing crisis is a massive task.”
The fact sheets showed that while Auckland had 30,249 public houses in total and 586 applicants had been accepted into homes in the three months before December 31, 2566 applicants still remained on the waiting list.
