Housing Minister Phil Twyford says a growing wait list for public housing shows the housing crisis is alive and well, despite a pause in house price growth.
New figures for the December 2017 quarter put the total number of people waiting for a state house at 7725, up five per cent on the previous quarter.
Twyford said that list represented the “sharp end” of the housing crisis.
“Fixing the housing crisis is a priority for the Labour-led Government. After almost a decade of state houses being sold off and not replaced, increasing Housing NZ’s stock is an important part of the solution,” Twyford said.
Controversial motel stays for those on the list are down as more transitional housing has come into use, but remain present.
