The biggest social housing development in Rangiora’s history officially got under way on Friday with a blessing at the site, which was attended by Waimakariri Mayor David Ayers, MP Matt Doocey and Housing New Zealand’s chief operating officer Paul Commons.
The development, on the corner of White and High Streets, will see nine old state houses replaced by 28 modern units.
Commons said the houses being demolished were typical of 1950s state houses and had been well-loved over the years.
They had stood the test of time, faring well through the earthquakes, he said, but it was now time to move on and he looked forward to coming back in a year’s time to cut the ribbon.
The exciting new development would play a major role in meeting future demand for social housing in the community, Commons said.
