Tamihere: Why can’t we build more social housing at Auckland site?

OPINION: Waipareira Trust is involved in housing development projects.

We are presently the developer of 120 units at 1550 Great North Rd, Waterview, and are contracted to deliver these social houses to Housing NZ.

These developments allow us to lever apprenticeships and jobs on these sites – given that they are three years in duration and will deliver fully qualified tradesmen thereafter.

In addition we endeavour, where at all possible, to connect our West Auckland folk to these types of opportunities.

We are only interested in developing social housing, given the significant plight of folk in the western districts.

I have met with Roger MacDonald, chief executive of Panuku –  the development arm of Auckland Council. I have also met with three western council members – councillors Ross Clow, Linda Cooper and Penny Hulse. I have also met with mayor Phil Goff.

I have conveyed to them a legal opinion that asserts that their cap on social housing, being built per site, is illegal because it breaches the Human Rights Act.
