Tasmanian Government’s pledge to reduce cost of living welcomed

Moonah resident Althea Pettit has spent the past few months wondering how she will make ends meet.

The pensioner lives in a public housing property but struggles to pay her medical, power and grocery bills.

“The last few weeks have been very tough not knowing where my next meal will come from,” she said.

“Not so much my next meal, but how I’m going to pay for things. I’ve run out of money.”

She said it was the first time in her life she had been in this position.

“The cost of living is definitely going up because every time I go to the supermarket butter’s gone up, everything’s gone up, so you try to keep your groceries down and then you’ve got nothing in the cupboard,” she said.

Mrs Pettit said she had started going without little luxuries like Vegemite.

She would like to see more concessions offered by the Tasmanian Government.

“More concessions for people – that really counts,” she said.
