Last month, Compass Housing Services’ Managing Director, Greg Budworth, travelled to Surabaya, Indonesia, as part of the Technical Committee for the Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation.
The Guangzhou Award is awarded every two years and aims to recognise innovation in improving social, economic and environmental sustainability in cities and regions. It is co-sponsored by the United Cities and Local Governments, World Association of the Major Metropolises (Metropolis) and the Chinese City of Guangzhou.
Against a background of a rapidly changing social, economic and environmental factors, the Guangzhou Award contributes to the progress of city performances by promoting innovation in the public sector and presenting a platform for cities and regions around the world to share their achievements.
This year, the Technical Committee spent five days assessing 270 submissions from cities across the globe to create a shortlist of 15. The shortlist has now been submitted to an independent jury to select five winners.
Greg Budworth says the Guangzhou Award is an important platform to support the implementation of the New Urban Agenda (NUA) and UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): “The NUA and the SDGs are highly relevant for Australian governments and business, including in regional areas, because they provide a very useful framework for driving innovation to make cities more sustainable and work better for everyone.”
Compass Housing was instrumental in organising Australia’s first conference on implementing the NUA, held in Melbourne in 2017. A second conference will be held in Newcastle on 1st and 2nd November 2018.
