UNSW professional development course

To promote excellence in social and affordable housing, the University of NSW is offering access to their Masters level short course in Housing Management and Markets for housing practitioners. This is part of a move by the Built Environment Faculty to open individual courses within larger postgraduate programs for people interested in a topic but not enrolling for the full degree.

This will be of interest to:

  • Social housing CEOs and General Managers
  • Promising mid-level Managers
  • New senior-level entrants to the sector
  • Board members

The course will be led by well-known affordable housing consultant Dr Tony Gilmour, with contributions from international housing expert Professor Hal Pawson. Tony and Hal will be joined by a cast of private and public sector industry professionals, as well as leading academics in strata management, housing law and rental housing regulation.

Participants will gain an understanding of the rental housing and strata management industry. This will include multi-occupied residential buildings (the strata sector), market rental homes under professional real estate management, and affordable rental housing run by social landlords. Topics cover market structures, rental and strata property law, property and tenancy management approaches, and rental property investment practice. Detailed course content is available on request.

Dr Tony Gilmour

Run over six days, three sets of Fridays/Saturdays in September and October 2019, the course will be lively and topical. It includes a field trip, group projects and assignments. When the course was run in 2018, it achieved one of the highest student satisfaction scores of the UNSW Faculty of the Built Environment.

For further information on enrolment see the UNSW website. Fees are $3,690 which could be fully or partly supported by housing organisations or incurred as a tax-deductable payment by course participants. This is a great opportunity to build management, staff and board member skills – as well as showing the increasing inter-connected delivery approaches for new social, affordable and private housing.
